Can I Help You Get Organized?
It has been quite a while since I felt “inspired” to blog. see the thing with me is I need to feel inspired. I need to feel the electricity flow through my fingers in order to really write and also I needed to get my laptop fixed after it had an unfortunate malfunction. I nursed my baby back to help and in the weeks that i have been AWOL I have had loads of things happen that has given me fuel to my fodder. So in the coming weeks Im going to be talking about a lot of stuff.
Im going to tell you what i have been doing. Since my move to NYC I realised that it was sink or swim. I had to make money fast or I was going to sink. Its as simple as that. I have four kids to take care of. Yes I am fortunate enough to have my youngest son’s father around but one thing I learned is if you want something done then you need to do it yourself. Im not one to sit on welfare or raised my hand to the sky an d just hope that risq will fall from the sky so i did what i do best.
I put on my thinking cap and thunked….
I came up with an awesome idea and Im sharing this with the hopes that sisters out there that are raising children and have a need to make money in a halal way wearing hijaab can benefit and maybe do something similar in their own area. I decided that i was going to become a professional organizer. Yup you heard me right. I Go into peoples offices and/or homes and I organize their lives. It has been slow in building but now i am seeing the fruition of my work in so far as im getting cliets.
It aint easy. the job can be as easy as rearranging someones pantries(yes people pay for that) or as hard as reorganizing someones extreme clutter.
yesterday was a particularly eventful house. I had the 911 call from a lady in Brooklyn who needed her home de-cluttered. I told her my fee and we were set. I got up bright and early..and was on the A by 9.30am. Unfortunately there was work on the line so i had to take a shuttle bus detour with the other disgruntled persons who had accumulated from Queens and Brooklyn. The bus was packed. Contast chirping of phones and whiney kids and the “express” bus that was supposed to have taken 20 minutes took 45 minutes instead. I was already late by the time i got to Jay Street in Brooklyn so i had to haul Ass to get to Sunset Park for 11am. I made it there by 11.30 and made my way to the apartment. Im always worried when I go to a new client especiaally in any area outside of manhattan because I just dont know what to expect. As i got there and my client greeted me on the steps…I knew it was do or die.
When i got into the apartment i wanted to die. Theres a reason why in islam dogs are supposed to be kept outside the house. This chick had 2 dogs and 5 cats living in a 1 bedroom railroad apartment. A railroad is an apartment where all the rooms connect in a long oblong shape..so you go through one room to get to another in a straight line. The thing is dogs stink. So as you walked in the apartment there was an overwhelming pungent smell of dog pee and poop. The worst of it was the paraplgiic dog that was sitting on a mesh bed platform with a tray underneath. The entire tray was filled with dog pee. I was totally overwhelmed. And the clutter….all i can say is dayyyyyyyyyyyyyyum….There was so much clutter you could hardly breathe(apart from the doggy/cat funk)
Lets say by 9.30 pm I was ready to Be out and I had only been able to make a small dent on the house. She loved my work and wants me to come back on a project by project basis but I think Im going to have to double the fee(Im serious). It took 2 hours to get home because I figured Id take the J to broadway junction and avoid that bus. unfortunately so did the other Queens Dwellers. It took me the same two hours with my own self imposed diversion as it did taking the mta’s! I got home at 12am. Craaaaaaaaaazy! Hopefully this is the last weekend with that kind of diversion.
All in all I made my money and most importantly I did it in a halal way rocking my beautiful hijaab.
My point is if I with all my issues can do it so can anyone.
First of all sisters…use your creative mind. You will be surprised how many people need help with organizing their households. if you are a good creative thinker with a talent for putting things in their places then organizing can be for you.
Put up flyers, spend money on small advertisements in your local flyers/newspapers, write in e-groupss, forums, online classified boards in your area all promoting yourself.
I have only worked for women. I have been able to wear my hijaab. I have worked from High powered Attorneys to musicians. The world is your oyster!
